Bhakti Shastri Chapter 1 Verses 28 - 37

From verse 28, he says he doesn't want to fight. He gives 5 arguments. First 4 are in chapter 1 and last one is in chapter 2.

Reasons not to fight:
1. Compassion - V 28- 30
2. Loss of enjoyment. V 31- 35
3. Doesn't want to incur sinful reactions - V36-38
4. If he kills all the men, women won't be able to continue family traditions.
Chapter 2
5. He becomes indecisive after seeing all this.

In this chapter this is pretty much he talks till V 46.

Compassion:
Verse 28: These are the symptoms of compassion which Arjuna is feeling - quivering and mouth drying up.
Verse 29: More signs of compassion- body is trembling, hair on end and bow is slipping and skin burning. He has material fear - loss of life. He is also unable to hold on to his famous bow Gandiva.
Verse 30: He is on the chariot and he's saying I can't do this anymore. It has overwhelmed him. When we are in fear, we get overwhelmed and we forget whatever we know. In a bewildering condition - excessive distress and anxiety. When you are trying to run towards something material, you don't get it and then you become distressed and then we become despondent. Nimmittani Viparitani : Causes and just the opposite. He is seeing everything differnent. He was used to seeing a good life everybody as his family and happy and when he is seeing all this opposite, he is distressed and his mind is reeling. We find the causes of compassion of Arjuna who is a pure devotee. He is a pure devotee and the reason he's showing this sign is because compassion is in the pure devotee. But he is now covered by Krsna's Yogamaya. How do we develop compassion - but pleasing the devotees esp your spiritual master by trying to please him. Only when you are able to please him do you develop compassion. That's what we should try to develop this quality. He is truly compassionate, because he is actually thinking of both parties. He is not thinking of himself at all. He is soft hearted. These are all his material signs of Arjuna - He is being seen as a weakness of the mind. He also shows attachement to his family members and that would be a false compassion.

Loss of enjoyment:
Verse 31 - If you kill your friends/family - whom will be enjoy with later. If you have companion then it's more enjoyable. Example - if you want to celebrate janamastami and you are doing it alone how can you enjoy? We don't know why sometimes we are happy in this material life. Some situations are happy and some situations are unhappy. Nice description of roles of a Ksatriya. Please read the purport of this verse. If he kills his enemies he feels he won't be able to enjoy in his kingdom. Sometimes in material life, we want the position and post but don't want the responsibilities of that post. If you don't do your material activities properly, then you can't even do your spiritual duties properly. If you do your material activities properly then you are able to even focus on your spiritual duties.
Verse 32-35: When people are put into situations when they don't want to do something, they give different reasons and here also Arjuna is giving a reason. Here he calls him Govinda - because Govinda is the focus of all pleasures for cows and senses and indirectly he'll tell Krsna that you should satisfy him. That's how we are also. We should also please the senses of Krsna or other people. In case someone comes home and we serve the guests well, they will have a good impression of that person. We should always pray to satisfy Krsna's sensese. Hence, we should always sing the songs of the Vaisnavas acaryas - then we understand the mood in which we should pray to Krsna. Janardhana means the support of the people or the living entities. How somebody who supports people can see people getting killed. The other aspect of play of words is Jana Ardhana - killer, ardhana means killer and he's saying as you are the killer, maybe you should kill them so I don't incur any sins.

Don't want to incur sins
Verse 36- Here he's saying fighting will incur sinful reactions. He is his relatives and his elders and hence not proper to kill them. Killing our kinsmen - dharma shastra and artha shastra. Artha shastra says there are 6 types of aggressors. He calls Krsna Madhava - and Krsna is all fortunate.
Verse 37-38: He's trying to act as a saintly person and what he's forgetting is he needs to upload the principles of a Kstariya.
