What is Pridelessness? BG Class 13.8-12 by HG Shyamsundar prabhu

http://vedabase.com/en/bg/13/8-12
Krsna doesn't like his devotees having pride in their heart. For example he crushed the pride of Indra, Brahma, Gopis, Radha rani everybody. Hence, we need to be always humble with no pride. When we feel that we are great and don't consider ourselves in relationship with Krsna we feel pride. Hence, when we become KC we become so sensitive that we don't want to cause pain to anybody.

Mahaprabhu also says we need to be more tolerant that the tree. There will be lots of impediments in our path to devotion, hence we need to tolerate and keep going on without any pride and being humble. Either in happiness or in distress we should be very tolerant, without any pride keep going on. When good things happen we say it our karma Krsna is very merciful but in distress our mood should be that it is because of our doing. Hence one must tolerate everything that is coming to us. We can fake humbleness but tolerance is something which can't be faked. We need to cultivate this aspect of tolerance. How is the tree so tolerant - no matter what people do to that tree the tree tolerates. It still keeps giving - shade, wood for paper, fire etc. Tolerance is hence very very important. If we don't have tolerance then if someone says something we will be very easily swayed. Simplicity is without any diplomacy. Hence, we should surrender to our Spiritual master, simple life no duplicity - simple living high thinking. Surrender to the lotus feet of Spiritual master and cleanliness is very important to go ahead in spiritual life. Also only by tolerance can we gain knowledge which will help to destroy the nescience. Cleanliness is very important - external shower and internal by chanting the Hare Krsna mantra.

Steadiness is very important - we need to always be steady in our practice in spiritual consciousness. It is very difficult but it is the sign of sincerity. Week after week, month after month if we are steady in our KC practice only then can we grown in our KC journey. You need to keep hitting at the same spot again and again to break it and same way we need to keep hitting on the same path with the Hare Krsna mantra to break our false ego and one day all our anarthas will be cleaned up.

Indra is a great personality and he is chosen by Krsna to show us how a pure devotee needs to behave. He is only playing a part in the pasttimes, but he is a great personality. Similarly, Arjuna was put under the Yogamaya so he could be spoken to by Krsna about the Bhagavad Gita.

How do we transcend all these material modes - only by pure devotional service so we can remove these anarthas from our heart so then we can have the mercy of Krsna on us.

When someone has a lot of knowledge they become very humble. For example a tree full with fruits they automatically bow down. How do we get this knowledge by regular reading of SB, BG and chanting our rounds very very seriously. BG brings light and automatically all the misgivings are gone. Pridelessness is very very important. Lot of big devotees have fallen to this -  because Pride can come at any time into our heart and hence we should meditate on this point that we are absolutely insignificant and nothing can happen by Krsna's mercy. This verse and chapter 13 is very very important as they form the foundation of our spiritual life.

BG Chapter 13 verses 6-12 - Summary by HG Shyamsundar Prabhu

Bg 13.6-7 — The five great elements, false ego, intelligence, the unmanifested, the ten senses and the mind, the five sense objects, desire, hatred, happiness, distress, the aggregate, the life symptoms, and convictions – all these are considered, in summary, to be the field of activities and its interactions.
Bg 13.8-12 — Humility; pridelessness; nonviolence; tolerance; simplicity; approaching a bona fide spiritual master; cleanliness; steadiness; self-control; renunciation of the objects of sense gratification; absence of false ego; the perception of the evil of birth, death, old age and disease; detachment; freedom from entanglement with children, wife, home and the rest; even-mindedness amid pleasant and unpleasant events; constant and unalloyed devotion to Me; aspiring to live in a solitary place; detachment from the general mass of people; accepting the importance of self-realization; and philosophical search for the Absolute Truth – all these I declare to be knowledge, and besides this whatever there may be is ignorance.

This chapter starts with Arjuna asking Krsna what is Kshetra and Kshetrajna - field and field of activity. What is the field - The material body is the field and this body is because it is needed by the soul to perform some activity. For example - when we go inside water, we need an oxygen tank to help us to swim in the water. Similarly, when the soul enters the material world it needs a body - composition of the body is given in this verse. Total it has 24 elements! Besides these 24 - Krsna also explains - desire hatred happiness and distress - life symptoms are interactions within the field of activity. The process of knowledge (verses 8-10) tells us how to acquire knowledge.

Humility is the gateway to the spiritual world. Without being Humble you can't make progress in this spiritual world. Opposites attract and like poles repel. Krsna is great and if we consider we are also great then we repel. But when we consider that we are subordinate and we are nothing compared to Krsna (be humble) then we attract. When we bow down and surrender to Krsna only then does knowledge flow from higher authority to lower authority. Only a humble heart will attract Krsna and other vaishnavas. This knowledge will not come with reading shastra. Reading shastra will only make us humble. When we feel humble only then we allow knowledge to flow into our heart.

For example Sri Hanuman's story of burning Lanka. He was not humble dealing with Ravana. But he was very very humble dealing with Vaishnavas. When we are in front of Krsna, in front of mother Sita or Rama, Sri Hanuman was serving them, weeping and also taking care of them. When we are against the opposite party we are firm. Our time and energy are very important. We should just use our time and energy in serving Krsna because every min is important. Don't waste even a moment in your life. Always think am I using every min for Krsna or am I wasting my time?
