BG Chapter 13 verses 6-12 - Summary by HG Shyamsundar Prabhu

Bg 13.6-7 — The five great elements, false ego, intelligence, the unmanifested, the ten senses and the mind, the five sense objects, desire, hatred, happiness, distress, the aggregate, the life symptoms, and convictions – all these are considered, in summary, to be the field of activities and its interactions.
Bg 13.8-12 — Humility; pridelessness; nonviolence; tolerance; simplicity; approaching a bona fide spiritual master; cleanliness; steadiness; self-control; renunciation of the objects of sense gratification; absence of false ego; the perception of the evil of birth, death, old age and disease; detachment; freedom from entanglement with children, wife, home and the rest; even-mindedness amid pleasant and unpleasant events; constant and unalloyed devotion to Me; aspiring to live in a solitary place; detachment from the general mass of people; accepting the importance of self-realization; and philosophical search for the Absolute Truth – all these I declare to be knowledge, and besides this whatever there may be is ignorance.

This chapter starts with Arjuna asking Krsna what is Kshetra and Kshetrajna - field and field of activity. What is the field - The material body is the field and this body is because it is needed by the soul to perform some activity. For example - when we go inside water, we need an oxygen tank to help us to swim in the water. Similarly, when the soul enters the material world it needs a body - composition of the body is given in this verse. Total it has 24 elements! Besides these 24 - Krsna also explains - desire hatred happiness and distress - life symptoms are interactions within the field of activity. The process of knowledge (verses 8-10) tells us how to acquire knowledge.

Humility is the gateway to the spiritual world. Without being Humble you can't make progress in this spiritual world. Opposites attract and like poles repel. Krsna is great and if we consider we are also great then we repel. But when we consider that we are subordinate and we are nothing compared to Krsna (be humble) then we attract. When we bow down and surrender to Krsna only then does knowledge flow from higher authority to lower authority. Only a humble heart will attract Krsna and other vaishnavas. This knowledge will not come with reading shastra. Reading shastra will only make us humble. When we feel humble only then we allow knowledge to flow into our heart.

For example Sri Hanuman's story of burning Lanka. He was not humble dealing with Ravana. But he was very very humble dealing with Vaishnavas. When we are in front of Krsna, in front of mother Sita or Rama, Sri Hanuman was serving them, weeping and also taking care of them. When we are against the opposite party we are firm. Our time and energy are very important. We should just use our time and energy in serving Krsna because every min is important. Don't waste even a moment in your life. Always think am I using every min for Krsna or am I wasting my time?
